We were commissioned by the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town to design two, large windows - one in the east where the sun rises, and the other in the west where the sunsets.
As the V&A is a popular shopping and tourist attraction, we wanted to create illustrations that people could look at time and again while always discovering something new. We drew inspiration from hand-drawn nautical maps that played such a fundamental role in forming the world as we know it, as well as historical and mythological elements as an homage to the celestial bodies that enabled us to travel and trade in the first place. The views from the Waterfront are incredibly beautiful, dominated by the sky, the sea and Table Mountain. The fluid, transformative relationship that these elements have with one another drive the organic mood of the illustrations.
